That being the case the map was not very useful for traditional military land navigation. There are no gridlines and much of the smaller print is difficult if not impossible to read even under a magnifying glass due to its large scale as well being printed on the porous surface of fabric instead of the smooth surface of paper. Rather it was used primarily to determine a person's general geographic location so they could plan a route to "neutral" counties like Switzerland and Spain and be smuggled back to England.

DIMENSIONS:

Each map is approximately 58.5cmx60cm same as my original.

MATERIALS:

The soft cotton/silk fabric makes for a comfortable scarf as seen in many original photographs which helped prevent chafing on the wearers neck from the abrasive wool collar of the wearer's service shirt. paratroopers in Normandy and Holland were the "war-time" M1942 gloves the feature no wrist buckle and instead have a slit that go up the outside of the wrist.

We made 2 minor changes to the original glove pattern. First we made the fingers a "wrap-around" design rather than a multi-piece gusset design. Basically what that means is there are no seams on the palms of the hand. This makes the gloves stronger because there are no exposed stitch lines on the palm that wear out very quickly with use. This feature is not noticeable from the outside of the glove as it is worn. The second design change we made was we made the thumb an integrated part of the glove rather than a separate piece that is then sewn into the palm. This again eliminates an exposed stitch line on the palm and thus makes the gloves a tough as can be.

Color on these gloves can vary slightly from the pictures but all shades fall within the same color aircrews flying missions in the Mediterranean Theater during WW2. These maps were issued in escape kits along with a small compass and hacksaw blade (see my other listings) that service men could (if not thee) best reproduction ever made of this highly sought after cloth map. Created using the details of an original our reproduction holds the characteristics of size (approximately 15.5"x20"), color, shape, and feel. Printed on a cotton/silk blend fabric, it perfectly matches the weight, feel, texture, and opacity of an original. The only adjustment we had to make was to only print one side of the original map.

An original Sicily/Italy escape map was printed on both sides with one side showing Sicily and the lower portion of hidden easily on the body when captured as well as it was printed in an exceptionally large 1:1,378,000 scale. That being the case the map was not very useful for traditional military land navigation. There are no gridlines that can be scaled with a protractor and much of the smaller print is difficult if not impossible to read even under a magnifying glass due to its large scale as well being printed on the porous surface of fabric instead of the smooth surface of paper. Rather it was used primarily to determine a person's general geographic location so they could plan a route to "neutral" counties like Switzerland and Spain and be smuggled back to England.

DIMENSIONS:

Each map is approximately 15.5"x20". The outer dimensions of the boarder will vary from map to map. If you wish to make the map boarder uniform all the way around you can do so with scissors or a rotary fabric razor and a straight edge very easily.

MATERIALS:

These reproductions have an "unfinished" edge just like originals which means that the edges can fray with use. we use on our MKII pineapples really doesn't like to stick to rubber so we had to find an alternative paint. We settled on a color that is a bit more "tan" than yellow but our customers thus far have been satisfied with the paint color. These variants have the nomenclature roll stamped in black ink on the face of the projectile.

M9A1 variant- These are by far the most common variant of rifle grenade used by the US military during the war. Some WWII veterans have even commented that they didn't even know there were other versions. These variants are painted in wartime olive drab and the nomenclature is roll stamped in HE yellow ink on the face of the projectile.

M17 variant- This design was used during the early of the war through 1944 as an anti personnel rifle grenade using a standard MKII pineapple. These are painted in wartime olive drab but (like originals) do not have any nomenclature stamped on them.

These replica's are cast with a rubber head and rubber tail fins with an aluminum tube core. The rubber head and tail fins make it so there are no sharp edges to the nomenclature on these replicas is roll stamped using a rubber stamp the same way they were during WWII. However roll stamping is an imperfect process. Some numbers and letters may be missed or cannons, mortars, and tanks. When enemy equipment was captured or if American equipment was at risk of being captured by the enemy it was standard operating procedure to "spike" that equipment with pin the pulled and the spoon released the fuse would begin to burn, igniting the colored smoke compound inside causing smoke to billow out of a small hole in the bottom of the grenade (hole is covered by tape which is painted over, like originals). It would take the grenade 30 seconds to a minute to put out a sufficient screen of smoke. These were used to cover the movement of advancing troops as manufactures had the exact same problem. If you are wanting a perfect example with perfectly crisp stamping it would be easy for you to repaint them and apply the nomenclature with stencils which shipped with the "solid" endcap glued in place while the endcap with the hole will be left intentionally unattached. Upon receiving your replica you can leave the tube empty or you can fill it with an inert substance, such as clay, to achieve the proper weight of an original. In either case you will need to superglue the loose endcap in place as it is not designed to stay on the tube by itself. To do this, apply a THIN line of superglue to the inside wall of the steel endcap and firmly press the endcap onto the tube. Do not use an excessive amount of glue or it may seep out onto the label.

The first and most important visual component we insisted on getting as accurate as possible were the steel endcaps. 90% of all modern replicas are 3D printed or resin cast making them fragile and prone to damage. Additionally the plastic/resin never looks like steel so they always look fake. For our replicas we deconstructed a demilled original 1/2 pound TNT block so we could measure the gauge of steel as well as use it to reverse engineer the exact size and shape of both endcaps including the iconic "detonator spigot" found in the right end cap.

The second component we wanted to get exactly right was the label itself. We started by creating a high definition scan of our original label then, in photoshop, we individually create each and every letter on the label from scratch using an overlay on the original image to ensure each letter was the exact same size and shape as their original counterparts.

Lastly, we needed to recreated the "tube" itself. To do this we used precision tools to measure our original examples to ensure the dimensions of the blocks as well as the radius of the corners matched originals exactly. The one and only change we have made from the original design was the material we used to make the tubes themselves.

Original TNT blocks were constructed of a cardboard tube with steel endcaps on both sides. Cardboard was the obvious choice during WWII because it was cheap and TNT is, of course, a "one-time-use" item so the tube did not need to be made of a robust material. However, because our replicas will need to be used for reenactments for many years we wanted to use a material that was not only strong but also waterproof. We settle on plastic over metal so it will never corrode and we made the walls extra thick so they wont break if they are stepped or sat on. Additionally if these are ever caught in the rain or submerged in water they won't fall apart like originals.

To date the most common replica 1/2 pound TNT blocks have fallen into one of 2 categories of manufacturing that both fall short of the real thing. The first being 3D printed. While 3D printed replicas can be cheap they rarely look like an original because you always see the 3d printing lines and the endcaps always look like dull gray plastic rather than steel. The other type of manufacturing has been resin castings of originals. The shape of these can look pretty good because they are actual castings of an original. However these have 3 major downsides, the edges of the endcaps are always very fragile because they are so thin and can break easily, second the endcaps never look like steel because they are painted, and third they are expensive because they are solid resin. With these shortcomings in mind we have designed our replicas to not only be some of (if not the most) accurate replicas that have ever been made but also some of the most cost effective replicas on the market.

****Note that our labels are made of paper, the same as originals, because of that these labels can be fragile if they become wet. If they ever become wet, we recommend that you do not handle them, simply allow them to dry on their own and the paper will not be as prone to deteriorating. Additionally, beings these labels are made of paper, they can fade when left in bright sunlight for long periods of time. If you ever wish to replace the labels on our replicas, please, reach out to us and we can sell your replacements****

Stand In The Door intentionally unattached.

If you ever wish to replace the labels on our replicas, please, reach out to us and we can sell your
